Today’s theme… Socio- economic indicators -What does the datasets can tell us? -What kind of data is available? -How connected with water resources? -Collected at national/sub- national level -combined by UN organisations, World Bank, etc -Information about social capita, economics, development, etc -Lot’s of different indicators, which can tell fascinating stories!

Summary -GDP vs other indicators – GDP is rather limited indicator and does not always reflect the real well-being of people -Importance of human development– Certain level of human development needed before good progress in economy can be made -Water resources and social indicators interconnected in various ways; very important to look beyond the ‘water box’!

9. Open source softwares Within the course we have used commercial softwares; there are open source ones too: Matlab  R rather similar to use, even more possibilities than within Matlab. Good particularly for statistics. A bit steep learning curve at the beginning Adobe Illustrator  Inkspace ok to use, not as flexible nor versatile than Adobe Illustrator ArcGIS  QGIS in many things better than ArcGIS but for mapping ArcGIS is still better
