Working it all out

Learning Objectives All pupils will know: explain that theories are scientific ideas that can be tested; recall some reasons why theories are rejected; recall one example of an early model of the Solar System; discuss some aspects of the exploitation of space. Most pupils will know: recall that there have been various models of the Solar System; explain the role of prediction and testing in the acceptance of models of the Solar System. Some pupils could know: explain why the speed of a planet changes as it moves around its orbit. Why Kepler’s model superseded the Copernician system
3
Starter Is the Earth Flat
4
So what do we know about our Solar System, and what did we know? Well in the beginning we thought “We’re Great”
5
And “We’re the center of the Universe!”
6
That was wrong So Copernicus tried again
7
And then a little later Kepler got it sussed They are not “Quite” perfect circles
