What’s the Difference? A Solid : A state of matter where the particles have an absolute shape and volume. The particles are packed together tight and vibrate at a constant rate. A Liquid : An amorphous form of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape. The particles tend to slide past each other. A Gas : A form of matter where the particles have no definite shape or volume. The particles move at an extremely rapid rate.

WORDS TO KNOW

A Phase is any part of a system that has a uniform composition and properties. Equilibrium is a dynamic condition in which two opposing changes occur at equal rates in a closed system.

Solid -----> Liquid The process of a solid changing to a liquid is known as Melting. Example: Ice to Water

Solid -----> Gas The process of a solid changing to a gas is known as Sublimation. Example: Dry ice to CO 2 gas

Liquid -----> Solid The process of a liquid changing to a solid is freezing. Example: the transformation of water to ice.

Liquid ----> Gas The process of a liquid changing to a gas is vaporization. Example: the transformation of liquid bromine to bromine vapor.

Gas -----> Liquid The process of a gas changing to a liquid is condensation. Example: Water Vapor to Water

Gas -----> Solid The process of a gas changing to a solid is deposition. Example: Water vapor to Ice
