4 So… what is IB? The International Baccalaureate Organization, IBO Curriculum: courses in several areas at different levels (HL and SL) A diploma: IB Diploma Programme, IBDP

5 What is the goal of the IBDP and IB (and AISG) courses? Develop students who: ask challenging questions learn how to learn develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures.

8 Part 2: AISG vs. IB Diplomas and Courses

9 Two courses of study – you choose AISG Diploma only IB Diploma and AISG Diploma One-year non-IB courses First year only of 2-year IB courses Both years of 2-year IB courses with external exams, passing marks earn an IB Certificate Results in AISG HS Diploma and some certificates Six, 2-year IB courses with external exams Also complete three core requirements: Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and CAS Earn at least 24 of 45 total points on external exams Results in an AISG Diploma and an IB Diploma

14 IB Assessment Internal Assessment (IAs) Assignments assessed by teachers here using IB rubrics and then the accuracy of their marking is checked by IB Part (usually) of AISG grade and part of IB grade External Assessment Tests and tasks written and graded by IB examiners Written assignments done in Groups 1 &2 classes and sent to IB Exams for 3 weeks in May of your senior year

15 What are the requirements of the full IBDP? Six courses, one from each of six subject groups Study three subjects at higher level and three subjects at standard level Complete the core requirements of EE, CAS and ToK

16 Part 3: The Core – EE, CAS, ToK

17 Extended Essay (EE) Formal research paper 4000 words Requires about 40 hours of independent work over a 10 month period Offers the opportunity to investigate a topic of individual interest, and acquaints students with the independent research and writing skills expected at university

18 Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) Encourages students to be involved in artistic pursuits, sports and community service work, thus fostering students’ awareness and appreciation of life outside the academic arena Must document (online) evidence of planning and reflection on eight learning goals Evenly balanced across the three areas Approximately 150 hours over two years(3-4 hr/wk) IB/CAS Coordinator assesses pass/fail, externally moderated

19 Theory of Knowledge (ToK) A formal class that meets half-time Designed to provide coherence by exploring the nature of knowledge across disciplines, encouraging an appreciation of other cultural perspectives Explores how we acquire, evaluate and use knowledge Must complete an internally assessed presentation Must write an externally assessed essay on one of several prescribed topics
