Class organization: From 09/21/ 2013- 12/15/2013 Class is on Saturdays from : Tuesdays-8.00AM-12.00; Rm #201-lecture days, AND Thursdays-80:00M-12.00M’; Rm #221- Laboratory Break: a. 15min ~9.15 AM on Th-lecture days only. Textbook: Foundations in Microbiology by Katherine Talaro and Barry Chess McGrawHill Publication Eighth edition Laboratory Manual for Biology 2420 by Wiersema/Sen Focus on: Study of microorganisms including morphology, metabolism, taxonomy, culture techniques, microbial genetics, immunology, bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, and diseases. Prerequisite: Biol 1406 (4 credits: 3 lectures and 3 labs) or any Basic Human Biology Course and the knowledge you acquired therein.

3. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Students with more than four unexcused absences will be administratively withdrawn. Tardiness will not be accepted. Attendance will be rec orded at the beginning of each class session. Students who are late (10 minutes or more) will be marked absent. Students will be responsible for the material covered in class during the missed class session GRADE COMPUTATION 100 = A 80 – 89 = B 70 – 79 = C 60 – 69 = D Below 60 = F GRADING SCALE 3 Lecture Exams 45% 1 Lab Exams 15 % Lab Reports 15% Final Exam 25% Total 100% Tests: A combination of take-home assignments and short tests in class Tests will vary in length and will be multiple choice. There will be 3 tests, each 15% o f the total. Laboratory exam will be identifying slides, sample bone, muscle, short answer type, match the following. There will be two tests each 7.5% of the total. Assignment will be the lab work, answering questions in it and drawing and labeling. This will be 15% of the total. Final exam on the last day of class, will be a cumulative one given by the HCC, in multiple choice format. chapters that were taught before it. This test will be 20% of the Take home tests constitute 10% of the total score. Maybe one or two. Lab work : consists of learning to use the light microscope and viewing slides of tissue relevant to the syllabus. Attendance is mandatory. If you miss a class then it is your responsibility to see that you make up the work on the slides and submit the labwork and assignments on time Dissection of Cat :Will follow the chapters in the textbook. Starting with the organ systems. It is your responsibility to keep up with the lab work and submit the completed assignments on time that means on the Thursday of the week. If not you lose 5 points on each week’s submission Final Score Average of all assignments, lab work and tests. (15X3+15+15+25) A small % of total score reserved for good behavior, prompt submission, full attendance and good lab work, at my discretion.

4. Lab Work and general rules of classroom Length of lab depended on the material. Lab at the end of each class. Have the manual and bring to class. Record your observations, draw brief sketches of slides showing your observations clearly and labeling them neatly. Pencil for sketches and pen for writing. Clean up before leaving room. If group work, then work together but submit reports individually. If there is a question bank in the manual, write the answers clearly and concisely and submit. Assignments and lab reports due at the next meeting. Points taken off for late submission. Miss test or assignment or lab work, no make up unless sickness or death in immediate family. If you need additional tutorial, we’ll set up a time after class. Cleanliness, punctuality and promptness appreciated.

5. Scholastic Integrity: Students are responsible for conducting themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling course requirements.
