1 Essay Boot Camp Unit 2 – Argumentative Writing Literary Essays

2 Writing about Reading 0 Who cares about essay writing? 0 Ace high school writing 0 Get into colleges (with scholarships) 0 Adults write essays all the time (even though they might not call them that) 0 Emails trying to persuade their bosses to do something 0 Reviews of great video or computer games or shows

3 Boot Camp 0 Today’s Goal: Work together on a quick essay; just for practice 0 Usually… 0 In this writing unit, we will generally have a mini-lesson and then go off to write independently. 0 Today… 0 We will work together 0 You will each “flash-draft” an essay in your LA composition books 0 This is to help you get a feel for how writers structure, or organize, essays

4 Boot Camp When writing an essay… It helps to start with a clear sense of the structure in which you’ll be writing Then, pour the content into that structure – changing the structure if you need to fit the content

5 “The Three Little Pigs” 0 Today we’re going to write a flash-draft essay (fast and furious) all in one day! 0 It will get you warmed up for writing a real literary essay 0 “The Three Little Pigs” 0 Why this story? 0 There are often big ideas about even the simplest of stories 0 Today’s work will move quickly and will not be easy; better to use a common story instead of more complex characters 0 Let’s get this story into the front of our minds… 0 Turn and talk – retell the story to each other. 0 Think especially about the third little pig………

6 “The Three Little Pigs” 0 We remember…. 0 The three little pigs build themselves their own homes out of… 0 Then the wolf came and called….. 0 And one after another, each of the pigs answered…. 0 The third little pig is NO WIMP! 0 What does he do at the end?

7 A Thesis Statement… 0 To write an essay, you need an idea that is important to you. 0 This could take a long time, but today we’re writing a whole essay in one day; so I’m going to suggest one: The third little pig is an admirable character because… 0 Think about the structure… 0 Your reasons… The third little pig is an admirable character because A, because B, and most of all, because C.

8 Unit 2 – Literary Analysis (Argumentative) Lesson 1: Boot Camp Reason #1 – Reason #2- Reason #3 - Think about… Are the reasons the same; just restated with different words? Can they be supported with evidence? Think about whether or not you are going to be able to find support from the story to defend your claim. If you don’t have any examples, your claim won’t stand!

10 To make it easy….let me suggest you write an essay using the claim: The Third Little Pig is an admirable character because A, because B, and most of all, because C. Talk together to come up with what your first reason could be, you’re A, what your second reason could be, your B, and So on? Go! The Third Little Pig is admirable because he works hard, because he is brave, and because he outwits his enemy.

12 The Third Little Pig, in the fairy tale “The Three Little Pigs,” is an especially admirable character because he works hard, he is brave, and especially because he outwits his enemy. The first reason that the Third Little Pig is admirable is that he works very hard. He builds his own home, which must take a lot of work. He builds it out of bricks, which must have taken an extra amount of work. He carried all those bricks to one place, laid them one by one on top of each other, and added in the cement. He made one wall, another, another, another. He even built a roof and a chimney. This shows that the Third Little Pig works hard and that is admirable.

Another reason that the Third Little Pig is admirable is that he is brave. He watched a giant angry wolf with big teeth blow down his brothers’ houses and try to eat them up but still, when the wolf came to the Third Little Pig’s house this pig was brave. He didn’t run and hide. Instead, when the wolf called, “Little Pig, Little Pig, let me come in,” the Third Little Pig called out, “Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin.” That shows that he is brave because he is not intimidated by the scary wolf, even though he has good reason to be.

17 Annotating 0 Last night I read something about how people get good at things… 0 DID YOU KNOW: World-famous chess players spend as much time reviewing their game and critiquing what they did as they spend playing chess 0 How is this relevant? 0 We need to spend just as much time reviewing and critiquing our writing 0 Today… 0 Focus on your essay, read and annotate (like you’re a teacher making comments) 0 Read your own and annotate and then do the same with your writing partner. 0 What has been done well? Suggestions for improvement? 0 Turn in your composition notebook to the basket when you are finished with the annotations.
