What is expository writing? The purpose of expository writing is to inform, explain, describe, or define the author’s subject to the reader. Expository writing gives guidance ideas to the reader (audience).

Characteristics of Expository Writing ★ focus on main topic ★ second-person pronouns (you) ★ clearly stated controlling idea (thesis) ★ details and examples ★ smooth transition ★ coherence (understandability)

Words to avoid in Expository Writing ★ “step” words (first, next, then, finally) ★ personal pronouns (I, me, my)

Masked vs. Procedural Masked writing appears in magazine articles, newsletters, and letters. Procedural writing appears in instructions, guidebooks, manuals, pamphlets, and catalogues.

Masked vs. Procedural Explain how to make a tasty coke float. The writer lists items or events in chronological order (procedural). Explain to an individual how to be successful at playing a certain sport. Guidance ideas to the reader (masked)
