Grid activities in Czech Republic Jiri Kosina Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic http://www.fzu.cz/
2
Experiments Czech Republic is active in(1) ● ATLAS, ALICE, D0 and STAR – detector simulation activities, reconstruction and data analysis in running projects - main participants are Institute of Physics, Charles University and Czech Technical University ● Facilities created by EDG are starting to be used by HEP projects under schedule of LCG in the scope of GDB, to which Czech Republic also contributes
3
Institutions involved ● CESNET (http://www.cesnet.cz/) ● Charles University in Prague (http://www.cuni.cz/) ● Czech Technical University in Prague (http://www.cvut.cz/) ● Institute of Physics AS CR (http://www.fzu.cz/)
4
Institutions involved – CESNET(1) ● Czech scientific network provider – provides all participating subjects with connectivity ● Founded by Czech universities and AS CR. It's main goal is to provide and develop main backbone academic network infrastructure. ● Currently their network (called CESNET2) provides on their backbone speeds of gigabites per second and connection to GEANT and other scientific networks.
5
Institutions involved – CESNET(2)
6
Institutions involved – CESNET(3) ● 12Gbps connection to GEANT ● 2Gbps connection to NIX (Peering with czech ISPs) ● 622Mbps connection to USA(Telia) ● 1Gbps CzechLight connection
7
Institutions involved – CESNET(4) ● Participating in European DataGrid project – member of WP1 (workload management) and WP7 (network monitoring) work packages. ● Certification authority was established during participation on EDG project – issuing certificates to czech academical subjects
8
Institutions involved – CESNET(5) ● MetaCenter (http://meta.cesnet.c z/) - project to establish virtual computer allowing efficient utilization of HW and SW of project participants
9
Institutions involved – FZU(1) ● Dedicated server farm for HEP and Grid computing (34x dual 1.13Ghz PIII, 1TB disk array, currently experimenting with new 10TB disk array)
10
Institutions involved – FZU(2) ● Member of WP6 work package – farm is running EDG 1.4 software, for testbed purposes ● Currently installation of LCG-tier 1 software (based on EDG software) is in progress.
11
Institutions involved – contacts ● Jan Svec - FZU farm and network system manager, D0 experiment ● Jiri Kosina - installation of grid software at FZU, ALICE experiment, network and system management ● Jiri Chudoba - ATLAS experiment ● - CESNET's PC clusters
12
Experiments Czech Republic is active in ● Czech republic is also member of EGEE project proposal. ● EGEE is going to be successor of EDG project, mainly sponsored by EU ● More information about EGEE can be found at http://cern.ch/egee/
13
Summary – Grid infrastructure ● Basic Grid infrastructure has been established during last year and further expansion due to research or commercial needs in future shouldn't be problematic ● CESNET provides good international network connectivity – 12Gbps over GEANT (http://www.dante.net/geant/) – Recently we have connected our farm to CzechLight optical network (1Gbps via Amsterdam to CERN)
