Circulatory System Structure/Function Anatomy of the Heart Circulatory System Problems
6
The circulatory system is responsible for transporting materials throughout the entire body It transports nutrients, water, and oxygen to your billions of body cells, and carries away wastes such as carbon dioxide that your body cells produce
7
The circulatory system is made up of 3 parts: ◦ Heart ◦ Blood ◦ Blood vessels

9
The heart is made of 4 chambers Right and left atria (top chambers) ◦ Fill with the returning blood from the lungs Right and left ventricles (bottom chambers) ◦ Pump blood to the body and lungs
10
The heart also has 2 sides The right side ◦ Pumps blood to lungs to pick up oxygen The left side ◦ Pumps oxygenated blood to rest of the body
11
The heart also has 4 valves Mitral and tricuspid valves ◦ Allows blood flow from atria to ventricles Aortic and pulmonary valves ◦ Control blood as it leaves the heart toward rest of body
12
Once blood leaves the heart, it travels through a series of “highways” or blood vessels Arteries - carry blood away from the heart Veins – carry blood back to the heart
13
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) Occurs when arteries become hardened and narrowed Plaque builds on inner walls, reducing blood flow to the heart Can cause: Angina Heart failure Heart Attack Arrhythmias
14
Hypertension (high blood pressure) Occurs when the pressure against the walls of the blood vessels is too high Weakens the artery walls, making them less flexible and forcing the heart to pump harder Can cause: Heart attack Stroke Heart failure
15
Heart Valve Disease Occurs when valve becomes narrowed (stenosed) ◦ Heart works harder; resistance to blood flow OR Occurs when valve becomes incompetent ◦ Heart works harder to pump out blood because a portion leaks back into the heart Can cause: Congestive heart failure Cardiomyopathy Arrhythmias
