Introduction Climate change is expected to greatly increase the likelihood of flooding. As the Earth becomes warmer, the polar ice caps melt and this results in rising sea levels. Flooding has serious effects on people’s homes, health and businesses. It can be both financially and emotionally devastating. Once a place has been flooded it can take years to return to normality and will probably flood again unless a flood prevention scheme is introduced.
4
Risks Many people live in flood risk areas: The red areas are the places most at risk of flooding. Low lying areas of land are at the greatest risk as are those areas around major rivers eg. the Thames Basin. If temperature rises continue, the chance of flooding could be increased and all of Great Britain could be shaded red.
5
In a detailed investigation into this summer's flooding the Environment Agency has made a series of conclusions. More than 55,000 homes and businesses flooded. Nearly £3 billion insured losses. Highest river levels for 60 years. Wettest May to July for 250 years. Two-thirds of flooded properties were the result of overwhelmed drains and sewers. More than 1,000 people evacuated from homes in South Yorkshire. This Summer’s Flooding
6
In recent years there has been a higher number of days each year when there is a risk of flooding, this would there for indicate evidence of climatic change. This graph from the University of East Anglia shows the number of days per winter on which there is a risk of flooding, the red bars indicate a low risk, whilst the blue bars indicate a high risk. What is the worst thing that could happen? With flooding, homes could be wrecked or ruined. Many people would have to be housed in emergency shelters. Transport would be difficult, like getting people injured by the flood to hospital. Many people might die. The cleanup cost would be massive, because if all the washed up rubbish, and many people would be out of jobs. Overcrowding would happen then disease could spread. Crops and livestock could be destroyed, causing a food shortage.
9
What are the main negative outcomes? Homes destroyed or ruined Transport hard Deaths and injuries Crops and livestock destroyed Massive clean up cost Overcrowding and disease Loss of jobs and property.
10
Why wont certain solutions work? Flood barriers might not work because of the power of the sea, which is very great. Drainage might not work because drains get blocked, reversing their affect. The water could also get in the opposite way as well.

How would you feel if this happened in your home area tomorrow? If coastal erosion and flooding happened in my home area tomorrow, I would be in a way annoyed because the roads would most likely be closed which would mean that it would be harder for people to travel. When we asked people how they would feel, most replied that they would feel unable to comprehend what was happening. Also, some people explained that they would feel upset as their possessions would most likely be ruined.
14
What are people’s views on flooding and coastal erosion? We questioned people on their views and they came up with points like disappointed that others weren’t helping. One person brought up the point of all the news saying that they need to recycle and walk more places. Although everyone wants to help it sometimes became hard to remember every little thing that they needed to recycle. Even though they tried to help they know that not everyone is also helping and that almost made them give up.
15
How does this issue make people feel? The issue of coastal erosion and flooding is a major impact of global warming. We asked people what they thought and they mentioned what they saw on the news. In places like China and Australia there is worse flooding but they were worried about that sort of flooding happening in their area. Watching destroyed homes fall to the ground and families search for their belongings made them scared that it could be them soon if we don’t stop polluting the environment.
16
How would you feel if you were going to be affected by flooding and coastal erosion? In our survey it came up that most people would expect the council to come and help dispose of the water. Recently there was a massive flood just outside of the YMCA, Paignton, and massive lines of traffic formed and eventually the road was closed off. This caused other main roads to have traffic which was barely moving. This proves that it affected everyone immensely. Eventually the council got rid of the water but if it had been sorted out earlier it would of saved a lot of time for others.
18
What good things might come from flooding and coastal erosion? One of the good things that could come from flooding and costal erosion is that scientist will know how to prepare for the next sign’s of flooding and costal erosions. they will also know what to expect in the next attack of flooding and costal erosion. the best thing is people learn from mistakes and the best opportunity is that we know what to expect when there is more floods in our country.
19
What is the best case scenario? The best case scenario would be that no one would be hurt in the damage by flooding and costal damage and that people have been relocated out of the area’s more liable to flooding and costal damage.
20
What opportunity’s might there be from flooding and costal erosion? Opportunities might be more jobs in the area to help sustain a flood barrier to prevent floods. Scientist may be able to look at the causes of coastal erosion they also might be able to learn more from this and track were it will be next. Due to time to prepare for the next floods people could be relocated homes to places safer from flood’s.
22
One solution to flooding would be to build more sea defences and to make defences along the banks of rivers that flood regularly. Also, another form of defence would be to put big rocks on beaches, so the water doesn’t get as far.
23
A solution to Coastal Erosion could be to use rocks as defences from the sea. For example if we put Rocks on beaches, then the sea won’t get as far as the rocks.
24
If flooding is going to become more regular, what can we do to cope with it? On thing we could do is to not build any more houses on flood plains or on low ground because the houses might get destroyed by flooding. Another thing to do
25
There are many things we can do to cope with Coastal Erosion. Councils can arrange not to build houses on top of cliffs and there could be something set up so people know dangerous cliffs.
27
After looking at all the different points of view of all the hats, we have come to the conclusion that Coastal Erosion and Flooding are major issues that can affect everyone in the UK. There are not very many ways to prevent them from happening as it is a consequence of Global Warming. We hope you found our presentation interesting and hope you enjoyed it.
