What is Agriculture?  Simplifying nature’s food web by channeling energy into simply growing food for consumption/use.

Industrial Agriculture  A key to using industrial agriculture is by only using a single crop for food, feed, fiber, or fuel purposes, this is called monoculture.  Farms that only focus on growing one or two crops will inevitably attract certain types of pests which are dealt with using insecticides and herbicides.  When dealing with livestock, many animals are put in close proximity to one another to save space. This tend to put the animals under stress and make them more susceptible to disease, which creates a large market for antibiotics, medications and vaccines.

Industrial Agriculture  Effects - Decrease in biodiversity, since farmers try to keep crops uniform -Herbicides and insecticides are accumulating in surface and ground waters. -Fertilizers which run off fields are getting into the water systems, and can eventually result in eutrophication. -Pesticides are potential for endocrine disruption, which disturb important hormone depend activities in animals such as reproduction.

Sustainable Agriculture  Aspects/Methods poly cropping natural insect repellants used- citrosa or liquid garlic extract less energy is used because plants are growing as nature intended  Effects each crop has differing harvest periods, which means less soil erosion both land and people do not suffer from ingesting toxic chemicals farmers face less economic loss because crops are better protected from disease/flooding/erosion by each other Crops include: carrots, beets and onions in one plot, corn, beans, and squash in one plot

Questions  How would things be different without agriculture?  Is it worth the damage we cause in the environment?
