36 th President of THE United States of America. 1963-1969

Early Life- Birth- He was born August 27 th 1908 in Central Texas, not far from Johnson City. Mother- Rebekah Baines Johnson Father- Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr. He was one of five siblings, Sam Houston Johnson, Josefa Johnson, Lucia Johnson, and Rebekah Johnson.

Early Life- He went to Johnson City High School. After high school he went on to graduate from Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College (Texas State University).

Before His Presidency- He married Claudia “Lady Bird” Alta Taylor. He had two daughters named Lynda Bird Johnson and Luci Baines Johnson. He taught at a school for a short time, but quickly moved on to politics.

Before His Presidency- Secretary to Congressman Richard Kleburg. 1933- He was elected as the speaker for “The Little Congress” which consists of all the Congressional workers. He attended George Town University Law School. July 25 th, 1935- served as President for the NYA (National Youth Administration). Served as V.P. for John F. Kennedy.

Presidency- After JFK’s assassination he was given the responsibility of the U.S. presidents. Designed the “The Great Society” legislation. Worked with Marin Luther King Jr. on civil rights issues.

The Vietnam War- Escalated involvement in the Vietnam War from 16,000 to 550,000. This act outraged some citizens especially young adults on college campuses. More crimes were committed in response to the involvement so the demands for “law and order” movements” were raised.

After His Presidency- His health had always been uncertain, but when he left office he was very ill. He retired to his ranch in Johnson City, Texas with his wife. He worked on his presidential library, which can now be seen at the University of Texas in Austin.

His Death- He died January 22 nd, 1973 of Myocardial Infarction. Myocardial Infarction is just a fancy word for a heart attack.

Facts- He died ONE day before the ‘Paris Peace Accords’ were finished, which would officially end the Vietnam War. During his presidency Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert Kennedy were assassinated (1968).
