Separation Processes
2
Separation processes are used to separate mixtures. Filtration, evaporation, decantation and sedimentation are all separation processes used to make maple syrup. Filtration Pour a mixture through a filter paper into container. The larger particles get trapped in the filter paper while the smaller particles pass through into the container below. Evaporation Heat a liquid mixture and allow the liquid part (the solvent) to evaporate, leaving behind the dissolved particles (the solute). PULLPULL PULLPULL
3
Separation Processes Sedimentation Allow the mixture to sit undisturbed. Eventually the mixture will separate into layers. The denser particles will fall to the bottom and the less dense particles will rise to the top. Decantation Following sedimentation, pour the top layer off the bottom layer. PULLPULL PULLPULL

Separation Processes Distillation Heat a mixture on a hot plate (like evaporation), but collect the steam in a cooling tube which re-condenses the steam into liquid. Especially useful for separating two liquids which evaporate at different temperatures. Centrifugation Place the liquid in tiny test tubes. Place the test tubes into a centrifuge which spin them until the mixture separates. PULLPULL PULLPULL
