Chapter 1 Science & Measurement
2
Time A useful measurement of changes in motion or events; all or parts of the past, present, and future Identifies a particular moment. Interval between a beginning and an end. In lab, we’ll measure it in seconds. A timer separates hours, minutes, & seconds using a colon (:).
3
Distance Length of space between two points. How far from one position to another. English system units –Inches, feet, miles Metric system units –Millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers
4
Scientific Method Experiment: any situation set up to observe and measure something happening Measurement: the act or process of measuring in multiples of a specific unit Process that leads to a reproducible answer Scientific evidence: an observation that can be repeated with the same result.
5
Scientific Method (2) Ask a question Formulate a hypothesis Design & conduct an experiment Collect & analyze data Draw a conclusion Test the conclusion
6
Scientific Method (3) Hypothesis: a prediction that can be tested by experimentation Variable: factors that affect the result of an experiment. Experimental variable: the variable you change. Control variables: variables you keep the same
7
Scientific Method (4) Experimental technique: how you actually do the experiment Procedure: a collection of all the techniques you use to do an experiment.
8
Speed Describes the movement from one place to another over time. Calculated value of distance traveled divided by the time interval to get there. English System units: –Miles per hour (mph), feet per second (fps) Metric System units: –Meters per second (m/s) –kilometer per hour (Km/hr)
