2 The main parts of speech in English are: 1- Noun : a noun is a word which refers to a name of a person, a place, or a thing, for example, Ahmed, Basrah, United Nations. Noun is divided into tow types : Proper and Common nouns. Proper Noun is a noun that is capitalized ; it should start with a capital letter, for example, Ali …. Common Noun is a noun that is not capitalized, for example, school, room, fan …. 2 The Main Parts of Speech in English

3 3 2-Verb : a verb is a word that shows an action or state of being. A verb is the heart of sentence, for example, the dog bit the man ( action ) the girl is smart (state of being) Verb is related to tense, so two types of verb should be considered : regular and irregular.

4 3- Adverb : an adverb is a word that describes and modifies an adjective or another adverb, for example, quickly, fast,…. There are three types of adverb : 1- Adverb of Place : here, there, outside,….. 2-Adverb of Time : everyday, today, month, ….. 3-Adverb of Manner : slowly, quickly, fast,….. Ahmad drove his new car slowly in the park yesterday. 4

5 4- Adjective : an adjective is a word which describes a noun or a pronoun, for example, good, bad, old, big….. 5

6 Lecture 2 Tenses Present Simple Uses of Present Simple: 1- We use present simple tense when we talk about facts : The earth goes round the sun. 2- We use present simple when we talk about an action happens all the time or repeatedly : Firas goes to the school every morning. 3- We use present simple when we talk about s0mething in general: He works in the factory. 6
