Demonstrating fluency, reasoning and problem solving. White Rose Maths Hub resources tailored to the 2014 maths curriculum. Provides clear challenge and progression Following pre-teaching of the core skills, children begin at fluency and then apply their understanding to answer a range of reasoning and problem solving questions. For the reasoning and problem solving questions children use purple pen to explain their mathematical thinking or prove their answer by doing the inverse.

Demonstrating and developing mathematical understanding All teachers have copies of these reasoning sentence stems and children are encouraged to use the most appropriate in their work. We have developed the use of ‘purple pen’ within mathematics to encourage pupils to explain their reasoning using mathematical terms. Challenge is provided by giving a word limit, or key vocabulary that the children must use within their explanation. Estimation and validation through completing the inverse are also encouraged with the use of purple pen. The practice has been very successful in KS2 & KS1, and is now implemented throughout the school.

Aiding Assessment for Learning with Exit Passes. Children independently complete differentiated exit passes at the end of a lesson. Question are taken from Maths Hub, old SATs questions, Testbase and the NCTEM mastery document. Passes can provide an instant assessment of who needs to recap the learning from the lesson, or who is ready to progress onto the next stage. Children respond to the challenge, and enjoy demonstrating their new understanding.
