Provisional Government Delegates decided to form a government made up of a governor, lieutenant governor, and a general council. Henry Smith was chosen as a governor and James Robinson was chosen as the lieutenant governor. The general council contains one representative from each municipality. (Smith and Robinson were part of the war party, but the council was a peace party.)

Problems with government Powers weren’t defined; much chaos was in the new government.

Consultation The consultation created an official army and named Sam Houston as the commander. They chose Stephan Austin, William Wharton, and Branch T. Archer as commissioners to the United States. Commissioners were people who traveled to the United States to get supplies, money, and troops to fight for their independence.

Grass Fight On November 26, 1835, Erastus “Deaf” Smith reported that a Mexican Calvary unit was heading for San Antonio. Edward Burleson, the commander of the camp, thought that they were transporting silver, so he planned an attack. Texans forced Mexican forces to flee. They got about three dozen mules, but they were carrying grass* not silver. *Hence the name “Grass Fight.”

The Battle of San Antonio de Bexar Texans forces were getting restless, hungry, and cold. The leaders were debating whether or not to attack San Antonio. Burleson thought about ending the siege before a Mexican official surrendered. The officer said that the army, in San Antonio, was in bad condition. They decided to not attack, but Benjamin Milam disagreed. He took about 300 men with him to San Antonio.

The Battle of San Antonio de Bexar (continued) The attack started on December 5 th. The men were divided into two groups, and sent to attack. Milam died on the third day of the battle, so Johnson took his place. The battle lasted 4 days, and the Texans had an advantage because the Mexicans were used to fighting on open fields. (They were in streets.) The Mexican army was driven to the center of San Antonio, the Alamo. On December 9 th, Mexicans asked for surrender. The agreement said they had to move south of the Rio Grande, and they could not fight the 1824 constitution.
