Chapter 5 Pp 134-137 Forgiveness of Sins

2 Sin – an offense against God; going against God and His Law. Original sin – the sin of Adam and Eve; they disobeyed God Actual sin – a personal, individual sin which a person commits

Actual sin includes:3 Freely chosen bad attitudes, ie predjudice or inordinate desires, ie lust Failures to act – sins of ommission Actions (including words) directed against God, others or self ie. Stealing, cheating, lying, misusing the gift of sexuality

4 “to commit a sin” is to do something evil, knowingly and willingly Sins differ in their degree(seriousness) There are two degrees of sin: Venial and mortal

5 Venial sin: “lesser sins” which weaken and wound our relationship with God. They do not destroy divine life in our souls. Mortal sins: a serious violation of God’s law of love. The result is the loss of God’s life in our souls.

6 Mortal sin is the most serious kind of sin. To sin mortally, the sin must include: 1.Grave matter 2.Sufficient reflection. 3.Full consent of the will

Venial sins can lead to:7 Vices – bad habits that lead us away from doing good to doing bad things – committing sin Some vices are known as the capital sins or deadly sins Capital sins: pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust

8 As Catholic Christians we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession. Through the receiving of this sacrament we receive forgiveness of our sins and also graces we receive from the sacrament. Remember: the priest is taking the place of Christ who is actually forgiving us.
