China Under the Shang The Shang King ruled from the capital and his realm was divided into territories governed by warlords (military leaders). - The king had the power to choose the military leaders and could also remove them. The kings importance can be seen in the way he was berried. He was buried like other earlier kings with his faithful servants a in royal tombs. The Chinese believed in supernatural forces. In order to communicate with these forces they used oracle bones. Kings would ask questions and the Priests would interpret the answers based on the cracks. 28. Kings were buried with their servants, showing that they were respected and believed in an afterlife.

Shang Urn The Early Chinese had strong belief in life after death. - Remains of human sacrifices in royal tombs are evidence of people trying to win favor of the gods The practice of burning objects to accompany the dead on their journey to the next world. The Chineese believed that spirits of ancestors could bring good or evil fortune, so it was important to treat them well.
