- The name Australia comes from Latin word that means Southern. - Only country that is also a continent. - -It is also the smallest, flattest, and the second driest continent in the world.

Australia is a desert continent. 2/3 of country is arid or semiarid climate. Rainfall is the dry areas is often unreliable. Why is Australia so dry? 1. location in the world 2. Low elevation 3. Mountains keep moisture from traveling into the center of Australia.

Most animals on Australia are endemic species….what does endemic mean? Most of Australia’s mammals are marsupials. What does that mean? Kangaroo, koala, and wallaby are examples of marsupials.

Australia’s first people were the Aborigines. Came to Australia from Southeast Asia atleast 40,000 year ago.

Britian settled Australia as a prison colony. As punishment they would be sent to Australia. 1830: 60,000 prisoners had been sent there.

92% of the people are of European descent. English is the official language. Spoken with an “aussie” accent. Most people live on the southeastern coast. Majority of Australians are Christian. Have a good educational system.
