1 Fluoride exists naturally in lakes, rivers and groundwater but usually at levels too low to help prevent tooth decay. – This is why many public water systems add a little more fluoride. Nearly 8 out of 10 Mainers whose homes are served by public water systems receive water that is fluoridated. Some well water has naturally occurring fluoride. Well water should be tested for fluoride. 3 6 – 9 Month Child Visit Message: Brush your child’s teeth with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste Children under the age of 3 years: Brush her teeth with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste twice daily (size of a grain of rice). Answer: Fluoride Toothpaste: Brush her teeth with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste twice daily. 4 by 4 – Fluoride Varnish: Ask her medical provider for fluoride varnish. Children who get at least 4 fluoride varnishes by age 4 years have 40% less tooth decay. Baby Teeth Matter
