5 Question 1  What does criminalistics mean to you?

6 Criminalistics  criminalistics: the branch of forensic science concerned with the scientific examination and interpretation of the minute details of physical evidence for the purpose of aiding the criminal investigator or a judge and jury during trial. Specialists who are trained to perform these duties.

7 Next Question  What does forensics mean to you?

8 Forensics  forensics: a fairly new, all- encompassing term, it characterizes the scientific examination of evidence. Owing to television and motion picture shows, the term is now generic and part of the vocabulary of the average person (and, therefore, jurors)’

12 Rules of Evidence  The law governing the admissibility of evidence. Some jurisdictions, like the federal government, have codified rules of evidence and procedure, as opposed to a reliance on case law alone.

14 Criminal Investigation  Some of the goals:  Determine whether a crime has been committed  Legally obtain information and evidence to identify the responsible person  Arrest the suspect  Recover stolen property  Present the best possible case to the prosecutor  Provide emergency assistance  Secure the crime scene  Photograph, videotape and sketch
