HEROES Canadarm wasn’t the only reason for Canadians to celebrate during the eighties in 1981, Terry Fox had Canadians rallying behind him in hopes that the one-legged cancer victim would be able to walk across the country to raise money for research into stopping that horrible disease Terry Fox ended his run in Thunder Bay but his legacy continues to live on as we hold the Terry Fox Run annually to raise money for the same reason

HEROES Terry Fox’s story also inspired Rick Hansen a paraplegic accident turned Rick Hansen a paraplegic at the age of 15 in 1985, he began rolling his wheelchair on a 34-country, 26-month trek around the world to raise money for spinal cord research he ended the tour in Vancouver after going across the country — and he visited schools along the way to help boost education about disabilities and the need to see past them

CALGARY ’88 heroism was on display in Calgary ’88, the first Winter Olympic Games held in Canada Canada did not win a single gold medal however, Canadians were fascinated by two other stories that rose out of the Olympics: a four-man bobsled team out of Jamaica, and Eddie The Eagle, a barely- trained ski-jumper from England who competed Calgary was also the debut of curling as an Olympic sport …and Ottawa’s Elizabeth Manley won silver

SEOUL ’88 later that year, Canadians rejoiced over the success of Ben Johnson at the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea Johnson set a new world record in the 100m sprint Prime Minister Brian Mulroney called it: “a marvellous evening” unfortunately, Johnson tested positive for steroid use and had his medal stripped from him Johnson would keep trying to get back in the sport but has continued to test positive for drug use
