Biology Today is Wednesday Sept 2, 2015 Drill: Compare and contrast simple and complex carbs. Outcome: Illustrate the structure of a lipid and explain how the body uses lipids
2
Compare and contrast simple and complex carbs.
3
REMEMBER!!!! Organic Molecules = Macromolecules Organic= Also Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen Monomers: Polymers: Smallest unit (puzzle pieces ) Many monomers put together (the completed puzzle) made of carbon
4
Organic Molecules = Macromolecules 1. Carbohydrates: main source of energy 2. Protein: build and repair body tissue (muscles) 3. Lipids: 4. Nucleic Acids: genetic information long term energy storage
5
Lipids One of the four organic molecules (or macromolecules) Function is to supply our body with long term energy Lipids are NOT used until Carbohydrates run out Make up 10% of our daily dietary needs Oils/Fats/Waxes
6
Lipids One of the four organic molecules (or macromolecules) Function as a important component of cell membranes Phospholipid bilayer -Part of the cell membrane -Can contain protein channels (allowing things to pass through) -The tails are hydrophobic (water fearing) -The heads are hydrophilic (water loving)
7
Lipids One of the four organic molecules (or macromolecules) Function as a carrier for Vitamins VitaminsFunction in our body AEye Sight CWound Healing DBone Strength KBlood Clotting
8
Lipids Building Blocks The building block (monomer) is 3 fatty acids and a glycerol. Also known as a triglyceride. There are two triglycerides: Saturated: Solid at room temperature. Example: Animal Fats Unsaturated: Liquid at room temperature. Example: Oils
9
Finding the Lipids Lab You will be looking at the amount of grease that comes off of the following four foods: Lutz Potato Chips, Cool Ranch Doritos, Cheetos Crunchy, and Ritz Crackers. Let’s look at the lab before we begin!
10
Exit Ticket Explain how your body uses lipids.
