Homer Homer is said to be a blind poet, and he is credited with writing: The Iliad The Odyssey More than likely, these were stories told in the oral tradition by a variety of people, and Homer took the opportunity to write them down.
5
Who is Odysseus? The King of Ithaca The husband of Penelope (who is the epitome of a faithful wife) The father of Telemachus (Odysseus left for war when he was 1. He is now 21) Someone who did not want to go to the Trojan war. He tried to fake madness in order to get out of going, but he was caught when he wouldn’t plow over his son. A quick witted, fair, and committed leader Even though he is quick witted, he ends up angering Achilles and a variety of gods/goddesses in his journeys (those epic flaws are always getting in his way)
6
The Trojan War: The Iliad Eris, the goddess of chaos, got Athena, Aphrodite, and Hera to fight over a golden apple (which would represent the most beautiful). Paris had to choose who gets the apple. The goddesses all offered him a gift, and he choose the gift Aphrodite offered - the most beautiful woman in the world. The most beautiful woman in the world was named Helen, so he kidnapped/eloped with her. Unfortunately, Helen was married to the King of Sparta. When the people of Troy refused to return Helen, the King of Sparta was not happy. The King got his brother to help him raise an army, and they fought Troy for ten years, unable to break the wall surrounding the city.

The Trojan War... Finally, Odysseus (because he is the smart one) comes up with the idea of the Trojan horse. Cassandra, a Trojan princess, warns against the wooden horse, but no one will listen to her. They let the horse in and, therefore, the entire Greek Army. The Greeks win, return Helen, and they all go home. Except...the gods are mad that the Greeks won. Also, Odysseus has been sassy, so Zeus decides to make Odysseus take the long way home. Even though Odysseus is sassy, he is still the favorite of Athena (his helper)...Welcome to The Odyssey...
