Simile Definition: A comparison using “like” or “as”. Examples:
She floated in like a cloud. It’s as cool as the back side of the pillow. The students were as busy as bees.

Metaphor Definition: A figure of speech stating that two things are similar. Examples: The book was a passport to adventure. You are what you eat. Her hair was silk.

Personification Definition: Giving human qualities to ideas or things.
Examples: His stomach growled like a beast. The sun smiled down on us with its warmth. The tree shook its branches angrily.

Onomatopoeia Definition: Words whose sounds suggest its meanings.
Examples: The bees buzzed. The rain went drip, drop, drip on the roof. Smash! The glass shattered on the floor.

Alliteration Defintion: Repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of words. Examples: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Silly Sally sang a silly summer song.

Imagery Defintion: Creating pictures for the senses (through similes or metaphors) Examples: He fumed and charged like an angry bull. They fought like cats and dogs.

Hyperbole Definition: An extreme exaggeration for emphasis.
Example: I must have eaten a million pieces of candy on Halloween.
