POETIC DEVICE (ADD TO YOUR TERMS) Poetic device= a technique that helps add to the poet’s expression. They are often NOT literal.

PERSONIFICATION (ADD TO YOUR TERMS) When someone describes an object, animal, etc. and describes it doing something human. Ex: The alarm clock glared at me. The wind crept after me.

SIMILE A comparison of one thing to another thing, using like, as, or than Ex: He was as swift as a fox He was brave, like a lion

METAPHOR Saying something is something else America is a melting pot The classroom is a zoo What do these mean?

ALLITERATION The repetition of similar sounds in words next to each other Ex: Peter Piper picked a pair of pickled peppers. The breeze sweetly sang as the sun sunk over the horizon
