4 Student Finance England What is it? Student Finance England (SFE) is part of the Student Loans Company SFE provides financial support to students from England wanting to go to university in the UK There is also a Student Finance Wales and a Student Finance Northern Ireland SFE is backed and funded by the UK government so their loans are not the same as standard commercial loans SFE is able to provide you with loans to cover your tuition fees and living costs You will use SFE if you are new or continuing student and if you are a parent, guardian or partner of a new or continuing student. © IntoUniversity 2015

6 Tuition Fee Loan Gets paid straight to the university This needs to be paid back Every student who is a UK citizen is entitled to one of these no matter how much their household income is (how much their parents earn) This covers the full cost of a student’s Tuition Fees © IntoUniversity 2015

7 Maintenance Loan This gets paid straight into the student’s bank account in instalments every term This is means-tested, which means that how much a student gets depends on their household income (how much their parent earns) and where they live. The maximum loan is £8200. Every student who is a UK citizen is entitled to a certain amount of this no matter how much their household income is (how much their parents earn) This gets wiped away if it doesn’t get paid back after 30 years © IntoUniversity 2015

9 Bursaries Students don’t have to pay this back This is given to students by their university and not Student Finance England This is only given to students who come from lower income households How much a student gets depends on their household income and the university that they go to © IntoUniversity 2015

10 Scholarships Students don’t have to pay this back This is given to students by their university and not Student Finance England These are awarded to students on merit e.g. academic, sporting or musical achievement Household income (how much your parents earn) is not taken into account when deciding which students are awarded these © IntoUniversity 2015

11 NHS Funding This is extra funding provided by the NHS This is extra funding for students who study medical related degrees e.g: Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Speech & Language Therapy This provides NHS bursaries which all students studying medical courses are entitled to. How much you get depends on your household income (how much your parents earn) This provides a £1000 NHS Grant which all medical students receive © IntoUniversity 2015

12 University and College Hardship Fund This is financial support for students who are in financial hardship, have unexpected emergency costs or are thinking of dropping out of university because of financial difficulty This is given to students by their university and not Student Finance England This used to be called the Access to Learning Fund All universities in the UK need to have one of these © IntoUniversity 2015

13 Disabled Students Allowance This is financial support for students who have a: Disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition or a specific learning difficulty like dyslexia The amount of financial support that a student will receive is dependent on the student’s individual needs and not on household income (how much their parents earn) This is extra financial support that is given to students by Student Finance England The money that students can get from this can help to cover the costs of: Specialist equipment like computer software, non-medical helpers like a note –taker, extra travel because of a disability, and other things related to their studies like photocopying © IntoUniversity 2015
