2 A verb is in the active voice when the subject of the sentence is doing the action.

3 For example: The cow ate grass. The subject of the sentence is cow. The verb in the sentence is ate. Since the cow is the one eating grass the sentence is in the active voice.

4 A verb is in the passive voice when the subject of the sentence is receiving the action.

5 The painting was painted by Phillip. The subject of the sentence is painting. Since the painting is receiving the action of being painted. It is a passive voice. For example:

6 Can you tell if the following sentences are active or passive voice?

7 The school was painted by Lonnie the painter.

8 The subject of the sentence is school and the verb is was painted. Since the school is receiving the action of the verb the sentence is in the passive voice.

9 The king commanded the slaves build the temple.

10 The subject of the sentence is king. The verb is commanded. Since it is the king who is doing the commanding instead of receiving the commands, the sentence is in the active voice.

11 The harp was played by Jessica.

12 The subject of the sentence is harp and the verb is was played. Since the harp is receiving the action of being played, the sentence is in the passive voice.

13 The children ran to the bus.

14 The children are running. It is an active voice.

15 The children ran to the bus. The children are running. It is an active voice. They are always active. The End.
