Forensics: The study and application of science to matters of law. Evidence: anything that tends to establish or disprove a fact Forensic scientists use crime labs to study evidence.

Crime labs have many departments: Physical, Biology, ballistics, toxicology, fingerprints, trace, etc. First job: determine the origin of the evidence

Department of Justice: Maintains the FBI, DEA and AFT labs FBI - largest crime lab in the world DEA – operates 7 labs, investigating major illicit drug activity inside and outside the US AFT - has 3 regional labs and a fire research lab
