World Geography! Unit 1 Introduction to… THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!
4
Of Course, the world is round.
5
The first major problem of Geography Cartographers: Mapmakers How do you accurately show a round earth on a flat piece of paper?
6
Another problem… Does the “roundness” of the earth really matter? GREAT CIRCLE ROUTE: a straight line is not always the fastest route! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3vaddypR GI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3vaddypR GI Follow the curvature of the earth!
7
Projections Planar: Most accurate at its center Cylindrical: Most accurate near the Equator. Distorted near poles Conic: Best at showing east-west areas that are not too far from the equator.

Determining Location
13
Latitude: “Parallels”, circle the earth parallel to the equator. Longitude: “meridians” circle the earth from pole to pole. Equator: 0 degree latitude Prime Meridian: 0 degree longitude, runs through Greenwich England. Why?
14
Absolute Location Latitudes and Longitudes set up a global grid. Each place on earth can be determined by where it is in that grid This is its ABSOLUTE LOCATION
