What is EBSCOhost? Extensive group of databases for a variety of users: K-12 students, college and graduate students, consumers, professionals, life-long learners Full-text access to periodicals, general reference books, pamphlets, an encyclopedia, dictionary, images and tv-radio transcripts

Why have EBSCOhost? Space-saving: No need to keep bound periodicals back for years Money-saving: A huge number of professional, academic and expensive periodicals that most libraries cannot afford Time-saving: With the search engine, no need to look up subjects and then find the actual magazine 24/7 access to all Iowans

The EBSCOhost Services Web (traditional – used the most) Text-only (good for dial-up customers) Spanish (search interface) Kids Search (K – grade 5) Student Research Center (grades 6 – 12)

Databases for general public and academic research: To see the list of databases, click on EBSCOhost Web Database list is best place to find a title list of books and journals included in each database

Databases for teachers and K-12 students Continuing in EBSCOhost Web

Picking a database: Choosing one or multiple ones Kids Search or Student Resource Center automatically groups databases

Choosing a database: Pick MasterFILE Premier and do a search Pick another database and do the same search Are the number of articles and the type of articles on the first page different?

Finding your way around the search screen: Defaults to advanced Green EBSCOhost tool bar Subjects Publications Dictionary Images

Doing a basic search: Can limit by pull-down menu Basic search includes all in the abstract and citation (title, author, subjects, annotation) Other options to limit: geographic terms and journal name

Do a basic search: Using the default, do a search Now, redo the search limiting by one of the drop-down menu options How do your results compare?

The Search Results: Limiting by type Limiting by subject Limiting by full-text must be done on the search interface (refine search tab)

The citation screen: Formats: html and pdf Subject hyperlinks (not a limiter like those listed on the side of the results screen) Printing, e-mailing, saving My EBSCOhost
