3 STUPID HICKS  After WWI, the south was referred to as a cultural wasteland  Criticized as “creating nothing of artistic value”  They wrote only of the old south

4 IN RESPONSE…  The southern literary renaissance began

5 KEY ASPECTS OF THE SOUTHERN LITERARY RENAISSANCE  Julia Peterkin  Wrote Scarlet Sister Mary……a Pulitzer prize winning novel of 1928 about African American characters

6  Archibald Rutledge  Wrote nature themed poems, essays and books

7  Poetry Society of South Carolina  Brought national attention to SC’s poets, novelists and writers

8  DuBose Heyward  Wrote novel Porgy (later turned in to an opera)

9  SC also contributed to the arts through the Harlem Renaissance.
