6 -9 Duchess Cruises is an international cruise line with headquarters in Long Beach, California. The company started in 1969 with one ship that offered a Caribbean cruise, and the business has grown steadily since. Duchess currently operates a fleet of 30 cruise ships and offers excursions to the Caribbean, Alaska, the Mediterranean Sea, the Baltic Sea, and Hawaii. The 30 ships are spread across five classes of different sizes and efficiency. Until recently, Duchess Cruises used manual methods to assign its ships to cruise destinations. Jane McDowall, the new vice president of operations, believes that Duchess Cruises is not optimizing its operating costs using the old method of assignment. Jane is also investigating two new business opportunities for the company. The builder of the original Island Duchess models (the smallest and least efficient class) has approached Duchess Cruises with a proposal to retrofit the ships with new high-efficiency engines that can burn a variety of fuels. The new engines would significantly reduce operating costs for the Island Duchess class. In addition, the Marketing department has studied potential new markets and proposed that Duchess Cruises begin to offer Australian cruises. You have been hired as an MIS consultant to develop a DSS model for Duchess Cruises. Your completed model will be used to assign the fleet to its cruise venues at a minimal cost. You will also modify the model to examine how upgrading the Island Duchess ships will affect operating costs and determine whether Duchess Cruises can expand into Australia with its current fleet.
