Building Connections through Brain and Body with Children with Dyslexia Dr. Penny Bryson Speech-Language Pathologist

Dyslexia Defined A specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge. IDA, NIA (National Institutes of Health)

It is written into the laws of our nation and many states to afford remediation, accommodations, and other services to help people with dyslexia succeed. It is a word woven into decades of research and groundbreaking approaches that alleviate the condition it describes. It offers a common understanding in classrooms across America that reading difficulties are not easily explained by laziness or low intelligence. A neurodevelopmental condition that effective teaching methods can address. Many states have incorporated the IDA definition into their laws.

The Dyslexia Debate IDA Responds to the "Dyslexia Debate” By Hal Malchow, IDA President-Elect Dyslexia-The Miracle Cure By Wynford Dore Medical Disorder – can’t be serviced on the IEP Must have specific markers

Theories Visual Theory: visual processing problems Cerebellar Theory: mildly dysfunctional cerebellum Phonological deficit Theory: sound manipulation impairment Rapid Auditory Processing Theory: deficit lies in the perception of short or rapidly varying sounds

And Then! The Magnocellular Theory attempts to unify the Cerebellar Theory, the Phonological Theory, the Rapid Auditory Processing Theory, and the Visual Theory.

BUT!!!! Is it… Evidence Based Treatment! EBT

EBT for Reading Development “Evidence-based” refers to practices that have been shown to be successful in improving reading achievement. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.” (Sackett D, 1996)

Reading In Rhythm ® Prime the brain with strategic movements that increase activity in the Cerebellum Increase whole brain organization by conditioning the Corpus Callosum Pair the brain organizing movements with the scaffolding steps of Reading Instruction. Take it step further with Story Dances to teach vocabulary, comprehension, and higher order thinking skills.
