+ Spreadsheets Microsoft Excel
3
+ Programs Microsoft Excel Quattro Pro (Corel) Open Office Calc
4
+ Programs Default filename in Excel book1 Extension for Excel files?.xls
5
+ What is a Spreadsheet? A set of columns and rows in which data is entered and organized Allows users to perform simple and complex sorting Allows users to perform calculations on values entered into the program Values can be analyzed, graphed and printed
6
+ Used to prepare: personal budgets forecast budgets daily sales reports financial statements recording student grades
7
+
8
+ Terms CELL A single box on the spreadsheet where data can be stored The intersection of a column and a row i.e. A2 is a cell, B4 is a cell.
9
+ Terms CELL ADDRESS Indicates the location of the cell within the spreadsheet (Name of the Cell) Ex: D25 (Column D, Row 25)
10
Cell Address B4
11
+ Terms CELL RANGE: Indicates a group of cells Ex: (B5:B11). These are all the cells in column B from Row 5 to Row 11
12
+ Cell Range B5:B11
13
+ Entering Data into Your Spreadsheet LABEL Text information(words) in a cell, which give meaning to numbers Can include title of worksheet, column headings, row identifiers or words to describe the function you have programmed Ex: Test 1, Total, 2012
14
+ LABELS
15
+ Entering Data into Your Spreadsheet VALUE Numerical data OR formulas that can be used in calculations DO NOT include commas, dollar signs, or other formatting characters Format the cell afterwards Ex: 100
16
+ VALUES
17
+ Formatting Values Signs can be added to data (after entering values) by using the Format Menu to change numbers to: Currency Percent Date Accounting …..
18
+ Format Cells Under Home Tab – Click on Bottom Right Arrow to have Number Dialog Box appear
19
+ Formulas The mathematical equation (which serves as instructions) you enter so that a calculation is performed Make spreadsheets powerful tools
20
+ Formulas Always use an = or @ sign (indicator) before entering a formula in a cell Need to use operators (+, -, *, /, ^) Spreadsheets follow BEDMAS Advantage: Saves time when values change
21
+ The following operators are used: More than one operation Uses BEDMAS Ex =sum(A2+D20)*5 OperatorsSymbolsFormula Example Addition+=B4+C4 Subtraction-=D12-C1 Multiplication*=A1*C3 or =D3*3 Division/=D3/D5 or =R3/6 Exponents^=D1^5 or =3^2
22
+ Formulas Can include: Numbers Cell addresses (K16) Cell ranges (K5:K57)
