Jacksonian America ► Andrew Jackson – beat John Quincy Adams ► Suffrage – The right to vote. ► 1824 Election – 355,000 voters ► 1828 Election – 1.1 million voters.

The Spoils System ► The belief in giving people government jobs in return of loyalty to the party/money. ► Jackson fired many of his friends.

From Caucus to Convention ► Created a National Convention for everyone to voice their opinion and choose a candidate.

The Debate over Nullification ► South Carolina’s economy was bad! ► South Carolina relied on English products to live – tools, cooking utensils. ► New tarrif – Tariff of Abominations was carried out and S.C threatened to succeed (withdraw) from the Union!

John C. Calhoun ► Vice President and South Carolina resident was torn. ► Explained that the states had the right to null and void a law since they helped create the Union.

Robert Hayne vs. Daniel Webster ► Webster was from Mass. ► Hayne from South Carolina. ► Webster stated that the Union had to be held together. ► Hayne was a starch advocate for states rights. ► Argued on the Senate floor for over a week!

Tensions Rise!! ► Andrew Jackson supported the Union. ► Created a new law in 1832 that would cut the tariffs down a lot! ► S.C not happy.

Tensions ► S.C agreed to not pay for the new tariffs. ► Force Bill was created to make S.C carry out the Federal law. ► Andrew Jackson sent a warship to Charleston as well. ► Henry Clay suggested another bill and tensions went down.

Indian Removal Act ► Many people though the Great Plains would never be settled. ► They wanted to send N.A there and get rid of the N.A conflicts ► Cherokee refused to move. ► Worchester vs. Georgia. ► The Trail of Tears.
