3 Napoleonic Wars  Conquering Europe: Annexes Netherlands, Italy, and Switz. G.B., Russia, Austria, and Sweden unite to fight Napoleon  1805 All had signed peace treaties except GB ○ Now what?

5 1st Mistake “Battle of Trafalgar”  1805 Napoleon attacks British Navy ○ British have #1 navy ○ GB takes half the French Fleet France never threatens GB again

6 2nd Mistake Continental System  1806 Set up BLOCKADE ○ Block all goods from getting into GB British Navy too powerful Many allies did not respect the blockade British Blockade France -Devastating to France

9 4 th Mistake “Invasion of Russia”  1812 Russia does not follow Continental System Napoleon invades with 420,000 ○ Russians retreat, burn everything behind them SCORCHED EARTH POLICY ○ Reach Moscow ○ Napoleon decides to return to France WINTER NOW SETS IN Russians now attack the French! 10,000 French soldiers make it out of Russia

11 Napoleon’s Downfall  Loss in Russia weakens Napoleon Troops tired, loose faith By 1814, Prussia and Russia march in Paris Napoleon surrenders his empire ○ Banished to the island of Elba (1814) Europeans sweeping Napoleon back to France.

12 The 100 Days  1815 King Louis XVIII takes power of France ○ People unhappy Napoleon escapes from Elba ○ People of France welcome him, make him Emperor AGAIN. Napoleon was in power for 100 days.

13 Napoleon’s Final Battle “Waterloo”  June 18, 1815 British and Prussians attack ○ defeat Napoleon at Waterloo (Belgium) ○ Exiled to island of St. Helena BY HIMSELF. Off African Coast Dies in 1821
