Energy security The Global problem

Key factors 1)Reserves of fossil fuels are beginning to run out. Oil and gas reserves should meet current levels of production for about 40 and 65 years respectively The easily accessible reserves have are now being fully exploited – those that are left are in remote, hostile, inaccessible locations –these locations will play a far more important role in the future. Technology will play an important role in their exploration and extraction.

Key factors Coal reserves are far more abundant but is a heavily polluting fuel when used without expensive clean technology. 2) Distribution. Global sources of fossil energy are unevenly distributed around the World –linked to geological factors: sedimentary rock types Renewable forms of energy have less issues with distribution as there is a wider mix of types so many parts should be able to adopt at least one renewable energy source.

Key factors 3) Political Issues Many non-renewable energy sources are concentrated in politically unstable parts of the world. Eg:- the Middle East. This has lead to potential disruption of supplies in the past and could be a key issues in the future. This is referred to as GEOPOLITICS.

Key factors 4) Increasing demand Economic growth in NIC’s and consumerism in post industrial societies is pushing demand for energy up. Key ‘hot spot’ areas will be India and China which will overtake the USA and Europe as the world’s largest energy consumers by 2030.

Key factors -conclusion These 4 factors affect energy security – and will be the focus of the next section of work. THE WORLD IS BECOMING MORE ENERGY INSECURE AS A ERSULT OF THESE FACTORS.

The UK energy issues For the majority of people in the UK energy is delivered straight to the door, via pipes, cables and in the case of oil by tankers. Electricity is available at the flick of a switch and is generated from a range of sources:- Natural Gas 36.8% Coal 35.2% Nuclear 20.9% Renewables 4.2% Others 2.9% Sources of UK electricity 2005

UK energy issues Tasks:- Using the A3 outline, the resource sheet and you own research, identify the sources of energy used in the UK and how these are changing.
