6 Main Idea- Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii bringing the U.S. into WW II Why it matters now- WWII established the U.S. as a leading player in international affairs Setting the stage- *Like Hitler Japan’s leaders wanted to establish an empire * 1931 Japan invaded Manchuria and Northeastern China

7 Setting the stage Continued * (1937) Six years later china’s heartland was in danger * Japan thought they would conquer China quickly. They were wrong! * Chinese resistance strained Japan’s economy * To increase their resources Japan needed European colonies in Southeast Asia

8 Surprise Attack on Pearl Harbor Oct. 1940 U.S. Had cracked a Japanese secret code- - Secret Message indicated a takeover of European Controlled SE. Asia - Japanese plans threaten U.S. Controlled islands (Philippines and Guam) - U.S. Aided Chinese resistance - Japan overran French Indochina (Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam) - U.S. Responds with Oil embargo

9 Despite oil embargo Japan continues its conquests Japan wanted to surprise U.S. and Europeans Attacks were planned on European colonies in SE Asia and U.S. outposts in the Pacific Yamamoto Isoroku Japanese admiral Planned Pearl Harbor Stated U.S. is “a dagger at Japan’s throat”

10 Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 “Day of Infamy” Japanese Message Decoded 19 ships (8 including battleships) 2,300 Americans killed, 1,100 wounded Roosevelt requested to congress a declaration of war Japanese also attack, (Hong Kong, Wake island, Thailand and Guam)

11 Japanese Victories 1942 Guam & Wake Island fell Philippine capital of Manila Burma, Singapore, Dutch East Indies (Java, Sumatra, Borneo) Bataan peninsula (Americans and Filipino defend) Japan now controlled 1million miles of Asian land and 150 million people

12 Bataan Death March- 50 Miles 70,000 POWs 16,000 Died Japanese often treated the people of their new colonies with extreme cruelty POWS Treated the worst (dishonorable to surrender)

13 The Allies Strike Back Early 1942 Japanese appear unbeatable U.S. wanted revenge for Pearl Harbor Doolittle Raid: April 1942 -16 B-25 bombers - Bombed Tokyo and other small cities - Little physical damage - Psychological damage ( Japanese were vulnerable to attack)

14 The Allies Turn The Tide Battle of Coral Sea (May, 1942) New naval warfare : First naval battle fought entirely by aircraft and not near land (Fleets often did not see each other) Allies Suffered numerous casualties Allies stop Japanese southward advance in the Pacific

21 An Allied Offensive Japanese forces were dug in on several islands throughout the vast pacific Many of the islands were Japanese strongholds Douglas MacArthur ( Allied land forces commander) came up with the idea of Island Hopping – The plan was to skip over the best defended enemy islands and move the U.S. military closer to Japan

22 Battle of Guadalcanal August 7, 1942 Japanese were constructing an airbase on the island of Guadalcanal U.S. easily seized Japanese airbase Each side sends reinforcements Bloody 6 month battle After loosing 24 of 36 thousand troops Japanese abandon the “ Island of Death”

23 Hitler Moves Forward At the same time U.S. and Japanese forces were battling in the Pacific, The Nazis were working to establish a new Order in Europe.
