NEW JOURNEY New School New Choices
2
Out and About Journey Planning
3
What did we learn last time? Use crossings if you can Choose safe routes If there’s no crossing, find somewhere safe – away from parked cars and bends in the road Stay focussed – never cross while using a mobile or stereo Use the Green Cross Code Don’t trust traffic
4
THINK FIRST STOP USE YOUR EYES AND EARS WAIT UNTIL IT'S SAFE TO CROSS LOOK AND LISTEN ARRIVE ALIVE
5
Where can you go?
6
Your personal checklist 1.Money, including some for emergencies 2.A phone card or mobile phone 3.Let someone know who you are with 4.Let someone know where you are going 5.Work out how to get there 6.Arrange a time to be home 7.List of telephone numbers in case you need to ring someone 8.A plan in case something goes wrong
7
OUT AND ABOUT What would you do if? …….
8
You have missed the bus home Is there another bus I can catch? Can I go back into school and phone someone?
9
One of your friends asks for a lift on your bike Best not to risk it! How good are you at negotiating or saying no?
10
Two of your friends are fighting on the bus If you can’t calm the situation down – keep out of the way. Let the driver know that there is a problem If things are getting out of hand it may be safer for the bus to be stopped
11
Need to phone but no money Make sure you know how to make a reverse charge call Dial 100 and ask for the operator to connect them to the telephone number that they need On mobile phones there is the option of dialling 0800 ‘reverse’
12
Quick Fire Round Take with me or Leave at home?
14
Have you done any of these? Hands up! Planned a journey Walked to somewhere Done cycle training Cycled somewhere Travelled on a bus Travelled on a train/underground
15
Safer journeys Think about a journey that you know – to school perhaps. Picture the journey in your mind What do you see? Now think walking somewhere new. Picture the journey. Is it as clear?
16
Practice, practice, practice! It is a really good idea to practice your journey to your secondary school during the summer holidays. Plan your route and walk it with your parents Work out where it is safe to cross the road Think about ….. www.travelinesoutheast.org.uk
17
Getting to school How long will the journey take? What time will I have to leave in the morning? How am I going to travel? Who will I travel with?
18
Getting home from school What time will I normally leave? How am I going to travel? How long will the journey take? What time will I get home?
19
Now think about – What if ……? It’s dark – can I be seen easily Is it raining? Have I got lots to carry? Money Bus Pass Travelcar d Cycle Helmet I stay behind at school?
20
How will my journey affect the planet? www.direct.gov.uk/en/Environmentandgreenerliving/Thewiderenvironment/Climat echange/DG_072920 www.carbondetectives.org.uk What is climate change? How does using a car for the journey to school affect the environment?
