AVI/Psych 358/IE 340: Human Factors Fitting the design to the body/Everyday Psychology September 10, 2008

2 Admin HW 1 will be assigned on Friday (Due next Friday) Re-organized groups (minor changes) Missed quiz or lab: you have one make up quiz/lab Check course website for updates (psych358.blogspot.com)

3 Chapter 3: Physical aspects of design What are the physical aspects of a design? –Color, shape, size, fit, material Why are the physical aspects important?

4 Ergonomics Studying human needs with respect to their capabilities (and limitations) –E.g., keyboard design (size of keys); chairs Three areas: –Physical ergonomics –Cognitive ergonomics (Studying workload, decision making, team activities etc) –Organizational ergonomics

5 Examples from the book Aviation –Critical incidents method –How to overcome pilot errors Toothbrush Urinal example Humane electrocution

6 What is the common theme? Importance of understanding the user Requirements come from the user (not from the designer) Errors occur due to violation of some design principle

7 Chapter 4: Psychological Aspects Understanding the human mind (“Natural Mappings” or “Affinity with human nature”) Examples –Automated telephone operators Menu structure “One option at a time” Cannot search for your option

8 Examples Magic Roundabout Time on the VCR Burners Keys and batteries Ziplock bags Palmpilot –Using detailed user study (“wood prototype”) –Feedback from the user –Avoiding feature bloat Science of Shopping

9 What is the common theme? Psychological aspects are important consideration in design –Natural mapping –Feedback –Consistency –Constraints –Affordance But these are not the only things you should consider

10 Cognition How humans perceive what is around them through their senses –Vision (perception) –Sound (auditory aspects) –Smell –Learning, Memory, Retention How can we incorporate these aspects in a design?
