1
Air and the Atmosphere February 2016
2
Atmosphere The atmosphere is a mixture of gases that surrounds a planet or a moon.
3
What do you think are the properties of air?
4
What property of air was shown at Station 2?
5
Properties Of Air Air has… MASS – the amount of matter in an object.
6
What property of air was shown at station 4?
7
Which property of air was shown with the teacher demonstration?
8
1. Flame heats air in glass, causing molecules to move/expand. Bubbles appear at base of glass. 2. Flame goes out and air inside glass starts to cool. Molecules move in closer, reducing air pressure inside. 3. Air pressure outside the glass is then greater and so water rises inside the glass. NOTE: Air is not disappearing or burning up in the flame. Air Pressure
9
Properties Of Air Air has… AIR PRESSURE – the amount of air pushing down on an area or surface.
10
Properties Of Air AIR PRESSURE – increases as you go closer to the Earth
11
What property of air was shown at station 3?
13
Properties Of Air Air has… DENSITY – the amount of mass in a given volume. Hot air = less density. Cool air = more density.
14
What property of air was shown at station 1?
15
Properties Of Air Air has… VOLUME- the amount of space an object takes up
16
What scientific concept did you experiment with at station 5?
17
Condensation
18
Heat Transfer Conduction – direct transfer of heat from one substance to another. (Sand burning feet, burning hand on stove) Radiation – transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves. (Sun, Fire, Heater) Convection – transfer of heat by the movement of a fluid. (magma in mantle, air, ocean currents)
