BELLRINGER Determine the pattern of inheritance as Complete dominance / Incomplete Dominance / Codominance 1.A pure tan cat is crossed with a pure black cat and produces tabby (tan and black spots) offspring. 2.A pure freckled person is crossed with a person who doesn’t have freckles. All of their offspring have freckles. 3.A red winged moth is crossed with a yellow winged moth. All of their offspring have orange wings.

Multiple Alleles: ABO Blood Typing
3
Do you know your blood type?
4
Multiple Alleles: the presence of more than two alleles for a genetic trait. Blood type in humans: – Possible alleles: ___, ____, ____ ____ and ____ are _________________ ____ and ____ are _____________ to ____ Blood TypeGenotype A B AB O
5
The ABO alleles make surface proteins called antigens. http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/units/basics/blood/types.cfm

Why does knowing your blood type matter? 1) Blood Transfusions: – Blood type A produces anti-B antibodies, which recognize antigens on “B” RBC’s and destroy them – Blood type B produces anti-A antibodies, which recognize antigens on “A” RBC’s and destroy them – AB doesn’t produce any antibodies – Blood type O produces both anti-A and anti-B antibodies, and will destroy A and B red blood cells. *O is the _______________________________ *AB is the _______________________________

2) Criminal Investigation – Forensic scientists can analyze blood from victims and suspects. – Important for eliminating suspects, before testing DNA which is a more extensive test 3) Paternity Testing – Analyze blood from mother, child, and potential fathers – Simple way to eliminate individuals before DNA testing Why does knowing your blood type matter?

Rh Factors While studying Rhesus monkeys, a certain blood protein was discovered. This protein is also present in the blood of some people. Other people, however, do not have the protein. The presence of the protein, or lack of it, is referred to as the Rh (for Rhesus) factor. If your blood does contain the protein, your blood is said to be Rh positive (Rh+). If your blood does not contain the protein, your blood is said to be Rh negative (Rh-). A+ A- B+ B- AB+ AB- O+ O-

Show the cross between a mother who has type O blood and a father who has type AB blood. GENOTYPES: PHENOTYPES:

A woman sues a man for the support of her child. She has type A blood, her child has type O, and the man has type AB. Could the man be the father? Explain.

Blood Typing Investigation 1.Test the blood types of individuals – Mother – Child – Sample X (possible father) – Sample Y (possible father – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93gRrqIpJlE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93gRrqIpJlE 2.Once, you know their blood types, use Punnett Squares to determine which sample (X or Y) is the child’s father

Ernie’s Exit A small pool of blood and a weapon was found near a garbage dumpster. After examining the area, a CSI on the scene discovered a body in the garbage dumpster and identified him as Ernest “One-Eyed” Earl. Earl had a wound to his chest that will be analyzed by the medical examiner. The CSI tested blood samples from the blood pool and the weapon at the crime scene. It was determined that it was human blood, but he needs to know the blood type to help him identify if it was from the victim or the person who murdered him. He has identified three suspects that either knew the victim or were seen in the area before the body was discovered. He would like to question them further while he waits for DNA test results.
