2 Bellamy was born March 26, 1850 in Chicopee Falls, MA His father was a Baptist minister Bellamy realized the difficult life of the urban poor when he was 18 years old He studied law but turned to journalism as a career

3 Bellamy believed that socialism was ideal for the United States He wanted to nationalize public services Bellamy was quite critical of conventional American attitudes His writings were popular after the Haymarket Affair in 1886 and the depression of 1893
