COINAtlantic Expanding OBIS Canada partnerships and Visualizing OBIS Canada IPT Resources SG-OBIS-V May 25 – 27, 2016 UNESCO/IOC Project Office for IODE Oostende, Belgium
2
Beginning an Atlantic Marine Biological Data Partnership COINAtlantic partnered with four organizations in Atlantic Canada to improve the accessibility of marine biological data. For more background on the data rescue project follow this link (http://coinatlantic.ca/index.php/atlantic-marine- biological-data-partnership).http://coinatlantic.ca/index.php/atlantic-marine- biological-data-partnership The data from these organizations were published on the OBIS Canada IPT and will be accessible on the OBIS Portal. It is intended to expand the partnerships in 2016-2019. The partnership identified the requirement to spatially review and visualize the OBIS Canada IPT resources. This enhanced the QC process.

Dynamically generated map services of the OBIS Canada IPT COINAtlantic has developed a tool that inspects the public entries in the IPT and generates an OGC compatible Web Mapping Service, a layer for each IPT resource, and a KML that provides basic metadata and a link to full EML metadata for each IPT resource. These products are discoverable online. The products can be displayed in a web map, searched and queried within the COINAtlantic Search Utility (CSU). A custom view of Atlantic Canada's marine species distribution can be accessed at: http://coinatlantic.tools/csu/?mapset=acmsd2015. The application will open with selected layers from the IPT relating to Atlantic Canada and the Project partners. Use the search function to add additional layers. http://coinatlantic.tools/csu/?mapset=acmsd2015 o For a list of steps to access the resources on the CSU follow this link (http://coinatlantic.ca/index.php/atlantic-marine-biological-data- partnership/visualizing-obis-canada-resources)http://coinatlantic.ca/index.php/atlantic-marine-biological-data- partnership/visualizing-obis-canada-resources

Advantages to COINAtlantic’sVisualization of the OBIS Canada IPT Resources Allows for immediate access once a resource is made public on the IPT Dynamic web mapping service, refreshes daily Full Darwin Core data set is downloadable via the metadata link Not limited to marine taxa Facilitates QC: visualize early and often Enables integration with other data sets, and any GIS software. The tool is fully based on Open Source software and compatible with OGC standards.

Future COINAtlantic Tool enhancements Integrate content from multiple IPTs including GBIF Registering OBIS resources with GBIF will enable use of GBIF API Expanding mapping services to WFS. Any nodes interested in exploring the creation of a custom search utility for their IPT please contact COINAtlantic coinatlantic@dal.cacoinatlantic@dal.ca

Some final points The COINAtlantic Data Accessibility Self-Assessment Tool (CDAST) is for use in organizations to develop a benchmark to monitor progress improving their policies and procedures for providing effective and easy access to their data and information. COINAtlantic invites members of the OBIS community to try CDAST and provide comments on its usefulness. CDAST is accessible at: http://coinatlantic.tools.http://coinatlantic.tools COINAtlantic welcomes DFO’s renewed plan for on OBIS Canada nationally. 8

COINAtlantic the organization The Atlantic Coastal Zone Information Steering Committee (ACZISC) was established in 1992 to foster cooperation in Atlantic Canada with regard to integrated coastal and ocean management (ICOM), coastal mapping and geomatics. It is a multi-sector forum with representation from government, industry, academia and non-governmental organizations. The ACZISC is transitioning its brand to the Coastal and Ocean Information Network Atlantic i.e. COINAtlantic COINAtlantic is working to provide open access to data, information and applications relevant to Atlantic Canada. COINAtlantic promotes: Reliable Access, Best Information, and Informed Decisions. 9
