3 Historical Background Information The colonists started to rebel against mother England when King George III imposed taxes on many essential goods. Colonists had no voice in British Parliament and did not want taxation without representation. The British in turn sent troops to the colonies to keep order. This increased the conflict even further. Before long the Patriots were fighting the British in a war for their Independence.

6 Document 2 Boston Massacre British fired shots on a crowd in Boston killing 5 and wounding Twenty-one days before-- on the night of March 5, 1770-- five men had been shot to death in Boston town by British soldiers. Precipitating the event known as the Boston Massacre was a mob of men and boys taunting a sentry standing guard at the city's customs house. When other British soldiers came to the sentry's support, a free-for-all ensued and shots were fired into the crowd. Four died on the spot and a fifth died after four days. Six others were wounded.

8 The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765. The new tax was imposed on all American colonists and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. Ship's papers, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed. The money collected by the Stamp Act was to be used to help pay the costs of defending and protecting the American frontier near the Appalachian Mountains (10,000 troops were to be stationed on the American frontier for this purpose). 14 The old liberty tree in Boston was the largest of a grove of beautiful elms that stood in Hanover square at the corner of Orange... and Essex streets... It received the name of liberty tree, from the association called the Sons of Liberty holding their meetings under it during the summer of 1765. After some time, meetings were held by colonists at this tree and following the repeal of the Stamp Act and the Boston Tea Party, the British cut down the tree. Thus, it became a symbol for the colonists. The sons of liberty opposed the stamp act and would tar and feather British tax collectors. Doc 6

16 The first cartoon appeared in Ben Franklin's newspaper The Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. It appeared as part of an editorial by Franklin commenting on 'the present disunited state of the British Colonies.' The woodcut drawing entitled 'Join or Die' pictures a divided snake in eight pieces representing as many colonial governments. The drawing was based on the popular superstition that a snake that had been cut in two would come to life if the pieces were joined before sunset. Doc 7

18 In retaliation for the Boston Tea Party the British passed what are now considered the Intolerable or Coercive Acts to Bring the colonies to the heal of the King The Intolerable or Coercive Acts Doc 8 Quartering Act: Established March 24, 1765 This bill required that Colonial Authorities to furnish barracks and supplies to British troops. In 1766, it was expanded to public houses and unoccupied buildings, and was updated again June 2, 1774, to include occupied buildings. Boston Port Bill: Effective June 1, 1774: This bill closed the port of Boston to all colonists until, the damages from the Boston Tea Party were paid for. Administration of Justice Act: Effective May 20, 1774 This bill stated that British Officials could not be tried in provincial courts for capital crimes. They would be extradited back to Britain and tried there. This effectively gave the British free reign to do whatever they wished, because no justice would be served while they were still in the colonies. Massachusetts Government Act: Effective May 20, 1774 This bill effectively annulled the charter of the colonies, giving the British Governor complete control of the town meetings, and taking control out of the hands of the colonialists. Quebec Act: Established May 20, 1774 This bill extended the Canadian

20 The morning of April 19, 1775 saw soldiers of the British Army arriving at the Massachusetts town of Lexington. Their mission was to seize and destroy militia weapons and ammunition, but the local militia, known as Minutemen, stood on Lexington Green, awaiting their arrival. During the stand off, a someone fired a shot, which led the British troops to fire at the colonial militia. The Minutemen dispersed, and the British headed toward nearby Concord.
