Purpose The purpose of a Curriculum Review shall be to affirm or to recommend changes to curriculum frameworks and/or an instructional materials review.

Purpose A review would typically result in one of the following actions: Affirm continued use of curriculum frameworks and instructional materials; or Establish a time line for completion of recommended actions

Introductions Please introduce yourself and share Work assignment Location Professional experience as it relates to a math adoption

Objectives Today you will: Review the Common Core State Standards for grades 6-8 Review current KSD middle school math curriculum Examine 2014-15 SBA data for grades 6-8 Describe strengths and weaknesses of the current KSD middle school math curriculum Recommend next steps in the curriculum review process

Norms Actively participate and monitor your own air time Have a positive presupposition; gently question ideas and listen to understand Suspend judgment Encourage and respect divergent thinking Stay focused and on task Practice positive problem solving Start and end on time When sharing information, focus on the content not the individual

Background Knowledge How were the current resources selected?

Common Core Math Standards Content Standards Major Clusters Supporting Clusters Additional Clusters

Content Standards Not all of the content in a given grade is emphasized equally in the standards. Some clusters require greater emphasis than the others based on the depth of the ideas, the time that they take to master, and/or their importance to future mathematics or the demands of college and career readiness. In addition, an intense focus on the most critical material at each grade allows depth in learning, which is carried out through the Standards for Mathematical Practice. To say that some things have greater emphasis is not to say that anything in the standards can safely be neglected in instruction. Neglecting material will leave gaps in student skill and understanding and may leave students unprepared for the challenges of a later grade. The following table identifies the Major Clusters, Additional Clusters, and Supporting Clusters for this grade.

Content Standards Note the major clusters on your placemat How does each grade level connect between the clusters?

Practice Standards The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education.

Practice Standards Which standard to you have the most familiarity with? Which standard to you need clarification with?

Examining our Curriculum With your partner, to what extent does the curriculum address: Major Clusters Practice Standards

Examining our Curriculum With your grade level, discuss: What are the strengths and weaknesses of the curriculum you are examining? What recommendations do you have?

Next Steps Based on the committee’s recommendation, we will: Begin reviewing potential new resources Meet again on January 15
