Key Identified Points General comment – I hope you all can begin to see that exploring the narrative by analyzing plot, dialogue, and characters does not mean that we believe these actions are not true. It allows us to examine the relationships between people and see the nuances that the author includes. A good example is Jack’s (and Greg’s) comment “In verse 6b where Eli says to Samuel, "my son", we may have a glimpse of how Eli felt about the boy, bringing him up, so to speak, and being with him on a regular/daily basis.” The author uses these words to convey a point, and I think Jack does a great job highlighting the message.

Nice comment by Lea – “The modern applicability comes from the fact that the world is as spiritually blind as Eli (and Israel). The world today, like Eli, knows of God, many “serve” God as faithfully (irony) as Eli served God, and much of the church is good at keeping up the rituals, but fail to lead the children to God.”

Key Identified Points Brian makes a nice theological point when he says “The theological message of the chapter is that God is more interested in heart attitude than position. He is not bound to use the “established authorities” to represent him and advance his work in the world.” Mike had a great comment on Jesus being like Samuel – where God works in the margins when the religion has become corrupted – a good point for modern application as well.

Key Identified Points Some nice focus points for application: Darcy and David - We, too, may not feel ready to be used by God or even know when it is He who is speaking to us, but, as His children, we have been given everything pertaining unto life and godliness. (2 Peter 1:3) Chris - Another issue is that if one were not able to take care of own household, how one can achieve having good ministry/service. – But also brings up questions on family accountability. Haitao – Nice thought that God’s call is mild yet determined.
