3 Calories Energy the body gets from foods The body requires a minimum number of set calories each day Take in fewer calories than burned: lose weight Take in more calories than burned: gain weight

4 Carbohydrates Starches and sugars found in foods Potatoes, pasta, and bread Body’s main preferred source of energy Simple and complex 4 Calories per gram of carbs

5 Fiber Found in the tough, stringy part of vegetables and fruits A special form of complex carbohydrate Although it cannot be digested, it is used as energy Plays an important role in removing waste

6 Proteins Helps build strong and healthy bones, muscles, tissue, and teeth Helps make new blood cells, and protect important organs, such as heart, brain, lungs, and skin 20 amino acids (building blocks of proteins) 9 are “essential amino acids” Can be converted to sugars for energy 4 calories per gram of protein

7 Fats Most concentrated form of energy; very thick substances; do not dissolve in water Fats in beef, pork, egg yolks, and dairy foods higher in saturated fat than in fish or chicken Unsaturated fat is liquid fat, proven to reduce heart disease Cholesterol is a fat-like substance produced in the liver of all animals, and found only in animals 9 calories per gram of fat

8 Vitamins Compounds that help regulate digestion, and metabolism (catalysts) Needed in small amounts, so they are called micronutrients Have no calories, but some do give you energy by playing an important role in the production of energy Most effective in their natural states (food)

9 Minerals Inorganic substances that the body cannot manufacture Act like workers regulating many important body functions One important mineral in the body is calcium which helps develop strong bones, and build strong teeth

11 What is Health? The World Health Organization defines health as, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well- being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

12 Health This definition of health has been expanded with emphasis on holistic health. We think in terms of the body working as a unit (mental, physical, social, and emotional) in order to maintain and promote optimum wellness through our daily actions. Wellness implies feeling good, regardless of infirmity or disease. Holistic refers to the wellbeing of the whole person. It is important to meet all of these needs when giving care to the patient/client.

13 Wellness Care Wellness and/or preventive health care emphasize keeping patients well and not waiting until they are ill to provide treatment. Health education is vital to maintaining good health The holistic wellness approach includes Physical Fitness Mental Fitness Social Well-Being

14 Physical Fitness achieved through routine physicals, rest, good nutrition, weight control, elimination of waste, exercise, well-baby check ups, regular chiropractic visits avoid drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and excessive food intake

15 Mental Fitness allows individual to interact effectively with others and feel balanced characteristics of mentally healthy person self-directed has a sense of belonging trusts own senses and feelings accepts self has self-esteem practices stress management

16 Social Well-Being allows individual to feel comfortable with others and allows the acceptance of behavior, attitudes, and beliefs; includes enjoying companionship, sharing ideas and thoughts, having a sense of belonging and showing enthusiasm

17 Health Care The Health Care System is a network of services available to people seeking treatment for health problems or assistance with maintaining and promoting health. The services are Primary Secondary Tertiary Extended care

18 Primary Care health services provided by the first health care professional or agency. Ex. Family practice doctor in an office or clinic

19 Secondary Care health services to which primary caregivers refer patients for consultation and additional testing Ex Surgeon, organ specialist, etc.

20 Tertiary Care takes place in the hospital where complex technology and specialists are available Ex. Surgery, Emergency Situations

21 Extended Care meeting healthcare needs of patients who no longer require hospitalization but continue to require health services. Ex. Nursing homes, home health agency, Physical/ Occupational Therapy

22 National Health Goals Increase the span of health life for Americans Reduce disparities among Americans Achieve access to preventive services for all Americans

23 Personal Goals To meet national goals, it needs to start with individuals improving their own health status
